About Josh.

Est. Richmond
NYC bound
frame 24A Iceland · 35mm

Singer-songwriter. Guitar player. Pop / rock / alternative.
Richmond, VA → Brooklyn, NY.

Josh Owens is a Richmond-born songwriter whose musical identity was forged at age seven — first by the ringing chords of 70s rock, then by the fire of 90s grunge.

Blending the technical agility of jazz with the raw storytelling of folk, the energy of pop, and the heat of grunge, Owens spent 2024 and 2025 refining his live performance and artistic identity in preparation for his upcoming relocation to New York City.

Known for his high-tenor crooning and dynamic, high-impact performances, his music explores memory, persistence, and transition. Whether a fiery electric set at The Camel or an intimate acoustic session at In Your Ear Studios, the sound stays expressive and distinctive.

The Final Year

The Final Year

They say you shouldn’t look at the engine while it’s running, but lately, that’s all I’ve been doing.

If you’ve been following the shift, you know things are changing. The acoustic guitar is seeing less light and the Strat and the grunge side of me are seeing more. I’ve been keeping my head down for a long time, focusing on the work and the “red-lining” required to build something that lasts. There’s a kind of deep hollowing feeling that comes from sharpening yourself too long without looking up. It’s been worth it, though.

But then, the signal breaks through.

I woke up to see The Auricular mentioning my set at The Camel after seeing me at AnyFolk back in May. They were comparing my sound to Tim Buckley’s Goodbye and Hello era. To be mentioned in the same breath as a virtuoso like that — specifically that era of atmospheric, high-tenor ambition — is a heavy honor that I’m deeply grateful for.

They also pointed out the clock on the wall. “Owens might be moving to NYC in a few months, so you should definitely show up on time and see him while he’s still a Richmond-based artist.”

It’s true. The countdown has quietly started. Nicholle and I have begun the stage I’ve coined “The Final Year.” We’re about to pool together money to clear the last of our debt, and then save for the move to New York.

New York for me isn’t just a place for music — it’s a place I feel understood. It moves how my mind moves. For the next few months, I’m going to reach deep into the RVA music scene and see how far it goes before we move.

Latest Things

I was interviewed by VCU journalist Alex Wilson — a longtime friend — about my music. It was a pleasure to catch up professionally. The interview and an exclusive performance of “Echoes of You” aired on VCU InSight the following Tuesday.

The Demos Album Is Out!

The days of me having to stare people in the face when they ask for my music at gigs are over. My debut demos collection, Demos You May Have Missed!, is now on streaming. It’s a solid representation of the songs I’ve written — helpful for live shows and my online presence alike.

All Is Not Lost!

We’re now on Spotify. I put two of the songs out as singles.

Delay

I’m heartbroken to announce that my debut live album, Live at IYE, will no longer be released on October 25 as planned. I’ve recently fallen ill with the flu and pneumonia, which has forced me to postpone the project’s release. Part of the album requires reshoots, which will now take place at a later date.

I’m devastated by this delay, but I can’t put out a half-baked album or reshoot with me huffing like I’m 80. I want this album to make a great impression of my music, enabling me to book gigs successfully and have something solid to share with audiences. It needs to be perfect. I’m eager to share it with you, but I need a little more time.

New release date: TBA. Thank you for your understanding, support, and patience.

Current State of Affairs

Just retrieved my black Stratocaster from Nashville — it looks beautiful and unique now, and it plays great. My concert movie will be released on October 25. I had some allergy concerns during filming but post-production helped sort it out.

Unreleased music is now on the website for testing purposes. The live album currently streaming was recorded at my first paid gig. It’ll serve as a booking tool and should reach Spotify in the coming weeks alongside the Live at IYE release.

The Ball Is Rolling

I’ve finally got everything falling into place. My new job is going well, and my voice is now cooperating. Next steps: recording, playing gigs, and saving up for the big move to Brooklyn. It’s happening, and I’m excited to take my music to the next level.

First Impressions

Finally — the first step in my career. Promotion.

While I wait for my vocal therapy to correct my voice, there is only so much I can do to assist in the foundation of my career. I thought a website would be a classic, yet worthwhile approach to showing off my music. As of today, I have not uploaded anything yet — but I will upload shows as soon as I record them.

First post done.
